I have been working with Sally Carter of the TapIn Leadership Academy to put together an afterschool business program for students in the Champaign-Urbana community. We have everything in place except for some excellent volunteers. That’s where you come in…
Currently, there are 5 groups of 4 young ladies who would be participating in this program. They all come from Franklin and Jefferson Middle Schools in town. These young ladies participate in TapIn’s program Monday – Thursday from 3:15 – 6:00pm. The first 45 minutes are spent on homework while much of the remaining time is focused on exploring different options for their future. We are really trying to highlight the option of Business for these young women. We will be meeting with students on Wednesdays from 4-5 or Thursdays from 5-6.
Here’s how the program would break down.
Each of you would meet with the same two girls (we need 10 volunteers total) for an hour each week. This would happen between the week after Spring Break through the last week of classes. The first week or two will be spent building rapport with your pair of students and assessing what type of business they would like to start. The next few weeks would be spent on researching their target market and putting together a simple business plan with them. Remember, they are in middle school so it will be very different than working on a case competition or a class assignment. The project will culminate with a presentation by each of the pairs of students regarding the product they chose and how they will sell it. The presentations will take place on Reading Day and we are hoping to have them right here in BIF. TapIn is located inside the McKinley Foundation on 5th and Daniel, so it’s right on-campus.
Please let me know if you are interested in this opportunity. You are all such strong leaders and students, these young women will be very lucky to have you as mentors (and I think the experience will have quite an impact on you as well).
Email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested.
